Haaaa... sooo... it's safe to say that I won't draw very seriously on DA anymore. For one, I literally haven't drawn for a year or two. And, I've regressed - if it hasn't already been noticed in those last two drawings on my gallery from almost a year back. I'm honestly not as good as other people on here, real art students like :iconbemused-dreamer:, and I really do recommend that you watch her. I'm no longer on Neopets, nor do I spend my time drawing animals if I ever do. If you have nothing better to do, I suppose you can continue watching me while I fangirl over my favorite time-old fandom, FF7 and butcher up my favorite characters slowly through my childish sketches. But uh, yes! Thanks for all the fish!

If this isn't the FUNNIEST thing you've ever read, I don't know what is. Here's what Michael Crichton said about premed at Harvard.

"In general, I found Harvard an exciting place, where people were genuinely focused on study and learning, and with no special emphasis on grades. But to take a premed course was to step into a different world -- nasty and competitive. The most critical course was organic chemistry, Chem 20, and it was widely known as a "screw your buddy" course. In lectures, if you didn't hear what the instructor had said and asked the person next to you, he'd give you the wrong information; thus you were better off leaning over to look at his notes, but in that case he was likely to cover his notes so you couldn't see. In the labs, if you asked the person at the next bench a question, he'd tell you the wrong answer in the hope that you would make a mistake or, even better, start a fire. We were marked down for starting fires. In my year, I had the dubious distinction of starting more lab fires than anyone else, including a spectacular ether fire that set the ceiling aflame and left large scorch marks, a stigmata of ineptitude hanging over my head for the rest of the year. I was uncomfortable with the hostile and paranoid attitude this course demanded for success. I thought that a humane profession like medicine ought to encourage other values in its candidates. But nobody was asking my opinion. I got through it as best I could."

Final Fantasy 7: Vincent and Tifa

January 20, 2007

With my four-day weekend this week, I've thought of nothing to do with my time except read. And I came across some fanfictions; it just so happens that I've been in a FF7 mood recently, and I'm surprised at the incredible VincentxTifa pairing fanbase out there. Although I'm more partial to the logical CloudxTifa pair (and on an official note, VincentxTifa has always been out of the question) the large majority of fanfiction stories about VinTi aren't so bad at all. The one thing that bothers me is how much people like to tout a renowned Vinti fic called "Feathers in the Maelstrom." Of all of the reviews I've read online, all of them have been 100%, passionately, unquestionably positive. Well, I'm going to be a fish out of water and my review is negative. Many of the reviews I've read vaguely hug the concept of Vincent's excellent characterization and the "amount of incredible/meticulous work" this Penfeather author put into the novel. But I question-- what is excellent characterization for Vincent? Until DoC, he's been vastly enigmatic; and it would be up to the audience to decide his ulterior motives and thoughts. What these people love about Vincent's characterization in FITM is really not characterization-- only the author's sympathy and regard for Vincent's personality. Nothing more, nothing less. She's careful about not bashing him into something bland and cliche, but she tries too hard to make him human. In fact, it's because of her intention to make Vincent and the story so realistically, complicatedly human that the entire story is dry. She writes about every action and thought, hitting pages upon pages of redundance. Overall, I think her style is long-winded and uninteresting-- although I admire her originality in plot work and background. But I'd rather read something more delicate and refined than a live diary of every-day occurrences, finely honed into even the most ignorable of events.

Please, writers out there. If you are ever going to write a story, do me this favor and keep this advice in mind: a story is a craft, a beautiful retelling of a piece of life. To inspire the reader is to let us taste the icing, not force us to gorge on a tub of cake. A story shows us the arc, then presents pictures (snapshots) of the most memorable moments. It proves to us that we are human (not data-collecting robots).

THAT is my rant for the day.

-Reminders to Self-

  • Must have giftart done for Ziie (or her contest-- not planning on rewards, don't want one)

  • Must have giftart for Frou/Revits in return for the wonderful picture of Silver

  • Need to get a character from Kira in order to draw giftart for her.

  • Got to get in some kind of picture for houndoom for her kindness

  • Finish my sketch so FROU will get to see a picture of Edoeka in my imagined human form

Yup, yup.

Busting my butt to finish the rest of college apps now-- especially after the disappointing deferral.
